Lagos Nigeria- In partnership with the Lagos Government, GAC Motor headlined Mama Nike’s birthday celebration in a classy affair powered by leading International branding and PR agency, Del-York International.

Have you ever been to an event and could tell, without any doubt, that heaven, earth, and a host of angels were invested in making the event victorious?

That was precisely the case on Sunday, May 23rd, at the Eko Hotels and Suites. On behalf of our Client, GAC Motor, Del-York International planned a grand event ― the 70th birthday celebration of an art colossus, Chief Nike Okundaye.

Glitz and glamour left behind, every event organizing team can tell you the detail of diligent planning that runs behind the scenes, alongside the chaos and insanity that defines event management.

Loads of thumbs up and event consultation requests later, our team at DYI thought to share some insightful event planning tips with all and sundry.

5 Things you Should Know Before Planning an Event

Why the Event? Many Birds… One Stone (or Rock)

You may think the purpose of your event is obvious until you do some deep thinking. What are the objectives of your proposed event? Is it relevant? If it is, what more can you achieve than the surface-level objectives? Sometimes ― many times actually ― event organizers underutilize their potentially multifaceted events. Mama Nike at 70, for example, was primarily organized to celebrate the birthday of the art juggernaut. It was also an opportune time to present her with the Art Iconia Award, and equally, a good time for the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to gift her a brand new car, the GAC GN8.

Ever had a thousand and one reasons to attend an event but one overriding reason NOT TO? If that one reason is the venue, then you know just how it feels when event organizers choose a wrong venue. No matter how much value you’re offering, if your venue neither speaks class nor is befitting enough for your invitees, then you’ve lost it.

The organizers definitely chose the best venue for the Mama Nike at 70 event. Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island is just perfect.” ― Sola, one of the attendees. Our event venue was the perfect choice for the calibre of personalities in attendance, from the ambiance to the security, style, and serenity.

The quality of your event can be quickly evaluated and heavily “JUDGED” from your invites and how you follow up with your Client’s guests. If you get it wrong at those points, then you’re failing your PR assessment test already. A significant mistake that event organizers make is trying to do everything themselves ― they cut costs and cut their reputation along with it.  Haha! Deal gone wrong.

Event planning is an entire world with different skill requirements. Be willing to outsource and wait for it… DELEGATE!

“I see an all-round display of artistic mastery in this event. It is aesthetically appealing to the taste of society’s crème de la crème. You are the real event gurus!” ― Ngozi, an event planner who attended our event.

Ever been in rehearsals so great and wonder why the performances after aren’t as good?

Well, they exhausted themselves in the rehearsals. That’s why.

This is common with events. Everybody has been all over the place, everybody has not slept for days, everybody is tired, irritable, and angry. Do events really have to be that stressful? Absolutely not, if planned by experts. Who’s planning your event? You? Your inexperienced event organizer neighbour who promises but cannot deliver? Or event planning and PR experts?

Contrary to popular belief, the end of the event is not the end of your work as an event planner ― there’s more to do; don`t go to sleep yet. Post-event engagement is crucial. You sure want to appreciate your guests and share some fond memories. Like every other thing, this too should be professionally managed.

So now, the big question, “Who’s planning and managing your event?” You? That may be good but not great. Great is consulting a PR firm to give your event some class and panache from start to finish.
