Gaining the reputation of being one of the most visually spectacular sports events of this last quarter, the 2022 Obong of Calabar Golf Tourney was organized by Del-York International in collaboration with Kabom Developers and the Cross River State Signage & Advertisement Agency (CRISSAA) and endorsed by the Obong of Calabar Executive Council.

To commemorate the 73rd birthday of His Eminence, Obong Edidem Ekpo Abasi Otu V, guests comprising top members of government institutions, Monarchs, and entrepreneurs like Senator Princess Florence Ita-Giwa and Chief Barbara Etim James of the Henshaw Kingdom, converged in Calabar from the 18th to the 21st of November 2022.

Upon arrival in Calabar, guests were treated to a VIP reception at our partner hotel, the prominent Transcorp Hotel, while golfers registered and collected swag bags at the renowned Calabar Golf Course. Our Beverage partners: Bigi, Sosa, Fearless, Martell, Chivas, Jameson, GH Mumm, The Glenlivet, Absolut Vodka, and Beefeater Gin were on deck to provide appealing cocktails before guests retired for the night.

All four days were full of vibrant music and cultural displays, while the nights held afterparties hosted by our nightlife Partners; Bamboo Lounge, Roman Lounge, and Embassy Lounge Calabar featuring Karaoke and silent disco parties.

The handing out of prizes was the highlight of Day 3. Special prizes ranging from household equipment to flight tickets were awarded to select golfers in various categories amid loud ovations. The winners included Commander Stella Idris for Best Net Ladies, Chief Patrick Iwara for Veteran Winner, Col. Ikpeme Ekanem (rtd) for Runner-up Veteran, Paul Ebiala for Runner-up Men, Raymond Ovat for 2nd Runner-up Men, Fidel Udie for 3rd Runner up Men, and the overall winner was Jean-Marc Degueldre, a Belgian South African and golf enthusiast.

The feeling registered in the morning before departure was bittersweet; the enjoyable event was over, yet most guests wanted to stay back and experience more of the warmth they had received in Calabar. Some did stay back, taking in the sights of Nigeria’s tourism capital.

Del-York International’s team worked diligently to bring the event to fruition. The success is manifest in the design collaterals used to brand the event space and the relationships forged with sponsors and partners, including Rite Foods, Pernod Ricard, Vicon Pharmacy, Hit FM, Ibom Air, and Bella Naija, our digital media partner who covered the entire event.

The main goal of the tournament was to enhance the relationship between culture, sports, and lifestyle and, more importantly, to grow the Golf brand in Nigeria to a global standard, garnering the interest of golf professionals worldwide.

This event would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors to whom we extend our earnest gratitude.

Del-York is proud of its involvement in the third Obong of Calabar Golf Tourney and sets a precedent for what it will continue aiming to accomplish with golf in this territory. Stay tuned for the next golf event in 2023. It is time for the world to recognize Nigeria as a world-class golfing destination.
